Last week John and I passed a real milestone in our marriage--our first trip to the Emergency Room! Don't fret...It was just because John almost sliced his finger off. Doing what? You might ask.. Making his wife a sandwich, of course!
Seven stitches and a week off later, all is well and all Richey digits are still attached. As comical as the situation was, though, it did make me think a little bit about what kind of supplies we had stocked in case of a more serious emergency, or even just for sick days. We seem to have accumulated various medications and aids over time, but I decided it was time to put together a real kit, just in case. I enlisted the help of my dear friend Haley, who is a nurse, to help me compile a list of essentials for a well-stocked first-aid kit.
(Lifehack: Forget WebMD. Find a nurse to be your best friend stat--they are the real deal.)
Here is the list we came up with!
- Saline Wash (We like Arm & Hammer because it has a little pressure to it, and "kicks the dirt out"
- Neosporin ointment
- Band-aids (Both the waterproof kind and the kind with antibiotic ointment)
- Gauze pads and paper tape
Allergy | Sinus | Rash
- Zyrtec (or whatever works for you)
- Non-drowsy Sudafed
- Cortizone 10 rash cream (great for eczema, poison ivy, bug bites)
Cold | Flu
- Mucinex (THE best.)
- Cough drops
- Throat Coat Tea
- Aloe Vera
- Bug spray
- Burn Cream
- Ice Pack
There is it is! Obviously, our opinions are our own, and your list may look different depending in your lifestyle and personal health. But, if you do not have an emergency kit in your home--this may be a good place to start!

A big thanks to Hales for helping me put this together. You are not only an exceptional friend...but a rockin' health professional as well.
